Death of a fish...

I received a 5 gallon fish tank from Dave (my bf) for christmas. He has 55 gallon tank and a 5 gallon tank and I loooove watching the fish swim around in them so he decided to get me started on my own tank. So it's been going for 1 week which is nothing for anyone who knows anything about fish tanks. The tank has to cycle and do all of this biology stuff...bottom line: bad levels of stuff rise and then good stuff comes and kills the bad stuff, but until the good stuff comes the fish will probably die.
Well my first fish died today. I was sad when it plunged to the bottom of the toilet bowl....maybe I'm not tough enough to have a fish tank!

  1. I never knew how hard it was and the science behind to keep a fish tank going. Growing up, it seemed like there was nothing to it! When I hear stories from my mom about how she cleaned/maintained our fish tank that we had for several years, I am so amazed and thankful for her hard work to keep our fishies alive! You can ask my mom for any tips! :) I don't think I'm tough enough to have a fish tank yet! :) I give Maia lots of credit, too; she could give you good tips!!!

  2. Hi Kris! What a cool Christmas gift! I miss my 30 gallon tank and all its inhabitants. It sure was a lot of work though! I lost quite a few fish, and even had to put some to sleep, because they got too sick. It broke my heart! It's surprising how attached you can get to those animals. Hang in there, and don't stop trying... I know you're tough enough!

  3. Keep going kris, you can do it! My roommate from college & I won two fish from the bloomsburg fair one year & kept them in a fish bowl. They surprsingly they lived through alot (people used to dump beer in the bowl during parties...). I took them with me after college. I had bought them a small(beginner's size)tank, after a while. But them I noticed that the one fish's fins were being chewed on.Then one day he was gone...I was so pissed at the other fish.I took care of him for all of those years & this is how he repays me???Depsite my anger...I continued to take care of him until he couldn't get rid of his belly bloat issue and finally one sad day, he passed. We went through a lot together...and he was only a fish!!! I hope to have a decent tank one day!
